CONFERENCE INFORMATION

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

The 2006 Progressive RoundtableSM convening, held in San Francisco, CA, pulled together the Progressive Marketing and Communications (PMC) Working Group to determine how the progressive movement can improve both the marketing of progressive ideas to a variety of audiences beyond the usual constituencies, and the strategic coordination of message development and dissemination.

Participants

The 2006 PMC Working Group consists of approximately 60 individuals engaged in policy idea generation, marketing and market research, framing and language development and testing, communications, public relations, political and communications strategy, media production, coordination of policy and social action programs, and progressive philanthropy.

There are many moderate and progressive organizations and individuals that can contribute to, participate in, and benefit from improved marketing and communication of progressive ideas and values. Groups and individuals that were not able to participate in the convening itself, because of its limited size, can still provide suggestions and information to the 2006 PMC Working Group through the Progressive RoundtableSM website. They can also sign up to receive news about the Progressive RoundtableSM and the outcome of the convening.

Accomplishments of the Convening

1. Identification of functional gaps in marketing, communications, and coordination capacity that will need to be filled through further development of present organizations and creation of new ones, if required;

2. Plans for advancing specific issues (global warming and energy policy, global interdependence, public education, and appreciation for the constructive potential of government), using newly created marketing, communications, and coordination capacity;

3. Commitments by the convening participants to work together, write proposals, and seek funding for the projects and institutions needed to fill the identified functional infrastructure gaps and carry out the specific issue projects;

4. Clearly identified financial targets for funders; and
5. Mechanism(s) for coordination to maintain working group cohesion and ongoing coordinated foundation, including tracking schedules and progress.

Following the Convening

The work of the convening has not ended with the conclusion of the three-day gathering. Post-convening efforts are now focused on funding and implementation of the PMC Working Group's plans. The Progressive RoundtableSM website, which includes intranet, database, and resource collection mechanisms, will continue to facilitate communication and coordination among participants and others in the progressive movement.
